Grade 8 students at Crowther Memorial Junior High and grade 9 students at George Freeman School recently stepped into the world of trades and technology during Skills Alberta’s Exploration Days. This annual hands-on event, designed to align with Alberta’s Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) Program, encourages creativity, problem-solving, and design thinking through real-world challenges. Each year’s Exploration Days are centered around a different design challenge.
The Challenge: Designing Sustainable “Alternative Dwellings”
Students were tasked with creating sustainable housing solutions to address affordability, climate concerns, and environmental impact. But before diving into construction, they first had to master the tools of the trade.
Hands-On Skill Building:
Teachers received “Learn-A-Skill” kits from Skills Canada, packed with materials to introduce students to various trades. Through six interactive stations, students explored:
- Plumbing & electrical installation
- Woodworking & sheet metal fabrication
- Fashion design & graphic design
- Photography & prototyping
These stations weren’t just about tools—they gave students a glimpse into potential career paths while teaching safety, precision, and craftsmanship.

From Ideas to Prototypes
Using a design thinking approach, students brainstormed, researched, and sketched their concepts. Some even had the chance to consult with a local architect, gaining insight into how professionals tackle real-world design challenges.
Finally, on event day, students across Alberta connected virtually to bring their prototypes to life. Unlike traditional competitions, Skills Exploration Days isn’t about winning medals—it’s about creativity, experimentation, and learning from mistakes.
