Providing cross-curricular opportunities for students can enrich the learning experience through authenticity and meaningful context. It also allows for the transfer of concepts across disciplines. Cross-curricular opportunities can be between core classes, core and option classes, or between option classes. Cross-curricular learning highlights and honours both disciplines, and unites their strengths. The possibilities are endless and the learning opportunities are infinite.
This example from Strathmore High School highlights a connection between senior high English and Art. This project built school community as well as relationships between students, students and teachers, and between teachers. “We intended to engage and connect our students, and hopefully improve their artwork and writing, and it did. We didn’t realize how deeply that [the project] would impact them.” Brandy Roberts, SHS Art Teacher.
