On May 21st 2026 you can become part of a global movement, and participate in Outdoor Classroom Day. The goal of this day is to inspire and celebrate outdoor learning and play across all Grade levels.

The opportunity to leave the classroom and engage in a lesson outside was a rare occurrence when I was in school. Despite the rarity, the novelty of such a situation created a lasting impression on me as a student, and provided ample evidence of how taught topics can apply to real world contexts. As a naive young student I was curious about why this wasn’t an everyday occurrence. The obvious barriers to teaching lessons outside (especially in Alberta) include unpredictable weather, managing transitions between spaces, and providing ample supervision to all students. However, if these barriers can be overcome, mitigated and minimized the benefits of teaching students in nature, their community, and the general outdoors can create Powerful Learning opportunities.
Powerful Learning is the intentional design of learning experiences that foster deep understanding while developing the core competencies students need for future success. It moves beyond simply memorizing information by immersing students in meaningful, authentic, and engaging learning opportunities that spark curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Through collaboration, communication, problem solving, and reflection, students are encouraged to explore multiple perspectives, make real-world connections, and develop the adaptability needed to navigate complex challenges.
Outdoor Classroom Day provides a natural opportunity to bring the principles of Powerful Learning to life. Rather than viewing outdoor learning as simply taking a traditional lesson outside, educators can intentionally design experiences that encourage students to question, explore, collaborate, and connect their learning to authentic real-world contexts. Whether students are measuring environmental changes in Science, analyzing community spaces in Social Studies, creating nature-inspired writing in English Language Arts, or solving real-world mathematical problems outdoors, the environment itself becomes part of the learning experience. By combining inquiry, movement, creativity, and reflection with meaningful curriculum outcomes, outdoor learning can transform everyday lessons into engaging experiences that foster deep understanding, curiosity, and the development of future-ready competencies.
