Social-emotional learning (SEL) is an important part of all classrooms because it lays the foundations for student learning. The social-emotional skills that students develop are as important as learning how to read, write, count and find Canada on a map. According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) there are 5 sets of competencies that students should develop in order to be successful in all aspects of life.
- Self-awareness
- Self-management
- Responsible Decision-Making
- Relationship Skills
- Social Awareness

These core competencies can be built through explicit classroom instruction, schoolwide practices and aligned learning opportunities.
As teachers, it can be challenging to embed SEL in a meaningful way into everyday instruction so CASEL has collaborated with other groups to create user friendly lessons to embed SEL instruction in all classrooms.
Here are some of the resources you can access:
Reading with Relevance-Reading lessons for all grade levels that offer discussion questions and activities with an SEL focus.
Connect Science– Elementary Science lessons that focus on collaboration skills.
Facing History & ourselves– Humanities lessons that promote dialogue, self-awareness and empathy.
