Shifts in Practice – Igniting the Spark

Authentic Engagement, Powerful Learning, Strategic InstructionAuthentic Engagement, Powerful Learning, Strategic Instructionby Peter Ehrman

Watch this video to learn about shifts in practice that occurred in a grade 5 and 6 math classroom. The teachers (Lesley Riep and Jordan Trentham) in this video knew that in order to become more authentically engaged in numeracy, they would need to change the way they structured the culture of numeracy in their classroom.

It is clear that in planning the learning experiences for the students, the teachers kept the needs of students at the centre of all decisions and actions. When the teachers collaborated to further explore how to meaningfully engage students in math they accessed supports in the system. They began by letting their principal know, who then directed them to access their coach, which led to them to connect with the division math lead, as well as critical thinking expert.
